CHATSWOOD

Why live in CHATSWOOD

History...
Chatswood is named after the wife of district pioneer and Mayor of Willoughby Richard Hartnett. His wife Charlotte was affectionately known as Chattie, and in 1876 Hartnett named his estate "Chatswood". When the post office was built in 1879, the suburb took on the name of the districts most significant property The area began to prosper with the arrival of the rail in 1890, and by the 1920's, it was described as one of Sydney's "fashionable" suburbs and a commercial centre.
In the last decade, it has attracted many new residents from Asia, and the once very staid middle class area now reflects multicultural Australia.

Real Estate & Design...
The styles here are quite mixed. A few grand late Victorian and Federation homes still remain, but their once substantial lands have been subdivided into the classic quarter acres plots. Between the World Wars, the California bungalow was the dominant style, later followed by the substantial full brick homes of the '50s. Chatswood has also seen in recent times, the development of numerous modern apartment and town house complexes.

Shopping...

Chatswood is heaven to serious shoppers. Elegant Chatswood Chase is home to exclusive fashion, furnishings, food and supermarkets and of course the venerable David Jones department store. In Victoria Street, you'll find more department stores and specialty shops including an entire complex dedicated to oriental food and homewares.

Sports & Fitness...

If you like your set of tennis to be slow and powerful, then the courts in Archer Street are just what you need. The only problem with golf in Chatswood is deciding which course to play, as the place is ringed by excellent courses at Northbridge, Castle Cove.

Distance from CBD & Transport...
Chatswood is 11 km north of the CBD. Buses operate along the Pacific Highway to the city and North Sydney. In Victoria Street you'll find Chatswood Station with its fast rail link to the city. Famous Landmarks
The once congested Victoria Avenue has been converted into a pedestrian only mall, perfect for browsing or relaxing in the sun between bursts of retail therapy.

Restaurants & Cafes...
Sitting by the Australian staples of steaks, seafood, pizza and pasta are great asian restaurants. You can head to upmarket dining worthy of Chinatown or Hong Kong, or slip into a simple noodle bar for a fast lunch.
Schools, Education & Institutions...
Chatswood is well served by state schools for all ages, and excellent day care and kindergarten facilities. In nearby North Sydney, you'll find Monte St Angelo and Loreto Convent.
